What replaced many library card catalogs? ›

The card catalog was a familiar sight to library users for generations, but it has been effectively replaced by the online public access catalog (OPAC).

In subject area: Computer Science. A library catalog is a listing of all the items within a library, including books, DVDs, periodicals, and more. In the digital age, library catalogs are now available online, allowing users to search for materials by author, title, subject, identification number, or keyword.

The Hesburgh Library (main library) and its collections and services are open to visitors. However, visitors will be asked to leave at 8:00pm, when the building becomes available exclusively for the academic use of current Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff.

Back before computers were invented Librarians put information about their books on cards and filed those cards in cabinets called Card Catalogs.

There are three types of inner forms of a catalogue, viz. alphabetical, classified and alphabetico-classed. Author, Name, Title, Subject and Dictionary catalogue fall in the category of an alphabetical catalogue. A Classified Catalogue is so named because it is arranged in a classified order.

An online public access catalog, or OPAC, is an online database cataloging the sources and materials available at a particular library. Many colleges and universities have provided students with access to online public access catalogs. Public libraries have also begun using this technology.

A union catalog is a combined library catalog describing the collections of a number of libraries. Union catalogs have been created in a range of media, including book format, microform, cards and more recently, networked electronic databases.
