First introduced to the market back in 1989, the sneaker is one of the stand-out editions from Jordan Brand’s expansive lineup and was designed by none other than Tinker Hatfield. The model is a staple within the sneakerhead community even now, well over 30 years since its inception. Throughout the decades we’ve seen hundreds of excellent colourways, as well as collaborative editions with some of the biggest brands on the planet. Even Michael Jordan has stated that the Air Jordan 4 is his favourite Jordan rendition!

Here at Crepslocker we’re huge fans of the Jordan 4, just like many of our customers, so we’ve taken a look into the history books to pinpoint our 10 favourite AJ4 releases from over the years. While not an easy task due to the vast amount of choices, we’ve managed to narrow down our selections. Air Jordan 4 Retro “Fire Red”

First up it’s none other than the legendary Jordan 4 “Fire Red”. Launched in 1989 as one of four OG colourways, the kicks take on a mixture of white, red and black hues to form an unmistakable colourway that looks just as good today as it did the first time we saw it. Crafted from supple leather across the design, key features such as the winged lacing system are more apparent than ever, with the famous Nike Air logo also present on the heel tabs. Last seen in 2020, could these be one of the best 4s ever?

Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 Retro “Cactus Jack”

Now somewhat of a maestro in the sneaker world, back in 2018 Travis Scott was still fresh on the scene when it came to collaborative kicks, however that didn’t stop him cooking up one of the best pairs of AJ4s in recent memory. Decked out in an eye-catching blue colourway, the sneakers boast speckled details across the wings, Cactus Jack branding throughout and a fully nubuck upper for a clean aesthetic. Don’t forget the red details that really bring this pair to life.

Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 Retro “Pine Green”

Launched at the start of 2023, the Nike SB x AJ4 “Pine Green” marks the first time that Nike’s dedicated skateboarding label tried its hand at the Jordan 4. By making key additions such as improved cushioning and toughened build fabrics, the brand beefed up the already impressive silhouette and made it suitable for skateboarding. Showing off Nike SB logos on the heel tabs, a gum rubber outsole and a neat pine green colourway, this pair proved immensely popular and remains one of the best Jordan 4s of all time.

KAWS x Air Jordan 4 Retro

Released long before many sneakerheads of today were in the game, the KAWS x Air Jordan 4 Retro launched in 2017 and was one of the very first pairs to garner a level of hype that’s considered normal by today’s standards. Crafted entirely from suede and decked out in a muted grey hue, the pair features subtle KAWS branding across its panels, with a translucent sole unit rounding off the look. Launched exclusively at top-tier Jordan Brand retailers, the pair summoned impressive queues at stores around the world.

Air Jordan 4 Retro “Thunder”

Dropped for the first time back in 2006, the Air Jordan 4 “Thunder” offers up a striking combination of black and yellow upon the classic silhouette. Featuring a full nubuck upper, the black base layer is completed with hits of vibrant yellow at the netting, wings and on the midsole. While there’s nothing limited-edition or out of the ordinary regarding this pair, there’s no denying that it’s an impeccably-clean version that’s worthy of a place in the collection of any sneakerhead. Luckily enough, we last saw the pair re-release in 2023.

Off-White x Air Jordan 4 Retro “Sail” (W)

The late Virgil Abloh is famed for being one of the greatest sneaker collaborators out there, and this subtle yet infinitely tasteful version of the AJ4 has to be one of his finest works ever. Using the 1989 classic as his blank canvas, the Off-White head honcho added his signature touches to the silhouette, including “AIR” branding, industrial build fabrics and the iconic zip tie. Launched in 2020 and exclusively in women’s sizing, this is a fine example of how a tasteful collaboration can be minimal yet still effective.

Air Jordan 4 Retro “Military Blue”

Another OG colourway from the late ‘80s creeps its way onto our list, this time in the form of the Air Jordan 4 “Military Blue”. Last seen in 2012, this colourway combines a white base layer with hits of muted grey and royal blue for an aesthetically-pleasing arrangement. While the last retro of this sneaker featured the Jumpman logo on the heels instead of the favourable Nike Air motif, there are rumours that a 2024 release is imminent, featuring the OG Nike Air logo that sneakerheads know and love.

Union LA x Air Jordan 4 Retro “Guava Ice”

Los Angeles’ very-own Union is one of the USA’s most popular sneaker stores. In recent years, the store has also built up a reputation for creating world-class footwear collaborations, such as the Union LA x AJ4 “Guava Ice” seen here. Showing off a one-of-a-kind feature in the form of the stitched tongue (something old-school sneakerheads would do to show off the inner Air Jordan logo), the collaboration also boasts an impressive arrangement of colours. Complete with Nike Air logos and a UN/LA tab on the laterals, this pair is a must-have for any serious Jordan 4 fan.

Air Jordan 4 Retro “Bred”

Last seen back in 2019, the AJ4 “Bred” is yet another OG colourway from back in ‘89. Showing off one of the most iconic colour combinations in sneaker history, this Jordan 4 is up there with the best and seems to work with just about any outfit you throw it at. Sneakerheads across the globe are already itching for another re-release, and 2024’s Air Jordan 4 “Bred Reimagined” could be just that, although the new version is set to be crafted from leather rather than the usual nubuck and suede.

Air Jordan 4 Retro “Black Cat”

While some may consider it underwhelming, there’s a lot to be said for the humble “Triple Black” arrangement that’s seen across plenty of different sneakers. Throw it upon the Air Jordan 4 and you have the AJ4 “Black Cat”, a pair that’s demanded the attention of sneakerheads for over 15 years. First launched in 2006, the Black Cats offer a stealthy take on the popular silhouette and last saw a retro release in 2020. A rotation essential for anyone, you might be hard pushed to find these for close to retail price now!
