Ingredients for my easy calzone recipe

This dough is mypizza dough recipe. You can make this in a bread maker or you can make it by hand.

1/2 teaspoon yeast

300g strong white flour

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

170ml water

Pizza toppings of your choice

Method for my easy calzone recipe

Make the dough and leave it to rise in a warm place for at least 30 minutes.

Divide the dough into two, to make two calzones.

I rolled my dough out like a pizza dough, into two large circles.

Then I dressed half the dough with homemade tomato sauce (reduced down), chorizo, ham, mushrooms and peppers. Then I added some cubes of mozzarella. You can use whatever filling you like.

Fold the dough over to make a half circle. Crimp the edges. I used a fork and it gave the desired result.

Cook in the oven for around 20 minutes on gas mark 6. I had two calzones in the oven so midway I swapped the pizza trays over. Once it was browning it was ready. This easy calzone recipe really is easy! It is cheap too, particularly compared to going out for dinner which is what my husband wanted to do.

There are so many options for fillings for this easy calzone recipe. You could use your favourite pizza toppings or you could just fill it with chocolate spread and marshmallows. Yum!

Looking for some tasty calzone fillings?

My homemade pasta sauce works really well as a base filling, and then I love to use any combinations of meat and vegetables that works well on a pizza.

Also, we LOVE to use sweet fillings too, like marshmallow fluff and chocolate spread, or biscoff spread and chocolate spread.

Chicken and chorizo has to be one of my favourite ever fillings!

Can you make a calzone in the air fryer?

Absolutely!! Just follow my recipe and start off with 1/2 the cooking time. Check it and if needed add another couple of minutes on. The air fryer always cooks things a lot faster I find, so 1/3 – 1/2 less time should be perfect, but it’ll depend on the size of your calzone and your air fryer, so keep a close eye on it.

FAQs

Is there a difference between pizza dough and calzone dough? ›

Both are prepared with flour, water, salt, and yeast; that's the solution. In contrast, the eggs and olive oil used in most calzone dough give it a deeper flavor and a softer texture. Eggs and oil are not common ingredients in pizza dough, contributing to its crispiness and durability.

How do you keep calzones from getting soggy? ›

Cut several slits in the calzone to allow steam to escape. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. Check the calzones halfway through baking and rotate the pan to evenly brown all of them. Allow calzones to cool on a cooling rack to prevent the bottom from getting soggy.

What do traditional calzones have in them? ›

A calzone is an Italian dish that features a circular piece of pizza or yeasted bread dough that's folded in half over a filling that includes ricotta, and often mozzarella and Parmesan, too, cured meats, vegetables and herbs, then sealed shut using a crimping technique.

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli? ›

A stromboli is larger and longer than a calzone and is baked as one piece and then cut into slices for serving a crowd. Calzones also start with pizza dough, but instead of forming a large rectangle, a small or medium ball is rolled or stretched out into a round.

Does a calzone have sauce inside? ›

Calzones never have tomato sauce inside the dough. They're always dipped. While stromboli is also dip-able, it's totally cool to put some sauce inside stromboli, pre-roll.

Is calzone more unhealthy than pizza? ›

Did you know that a standard calzone has over 1000 calories? On the other hand, a slice of pizza is around 300 calories. So just because they're technically the same in terms of ingredients and taste, they're not! A calzone can equal 3 slices of pizza so choose wisely!

What is the difference between a calzone and a pizza roll? ›

Calzones are basically folded pizzas, made from pizza dough and stuffed with the same ingredients as pizza - almost always tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, usually ricotta, often pepperoni and maybe some other cheese and cured meats - and then folded over like an omelette. Stromboli are more like pizza rolls.

What is the difference between pizza and calzone? ›

The basic difference between a pizza and a calzone is that a pizza is served on flat open bread, while a calzone is a closed dough dish that basically can have similar ingredients. Pizza, unlike the calzones, needs no introduction. It is known and eaten in almost every part of the world.

Do you cook calzone the same as pizza? ›

Roccbox, Dome or any Gozney pizza oven will make an awesome calzone but be sure to bake at a slightly lower temperature than a Neapolitan pizza - you'll need to bake the calzone for around 3 minutes and the dough will burn at those high temperatures - I aim to run my pizza oven slightly cooler and bake a Calzone around ...

What's the difference in a pizza and a calzone? ›

In simple terms, the pizza is a flatbread, whereas the calzone is more akin to a sandwich. While the ingredients are virtually identical, the presentation is comparable to night and day.
